AI: the untold story (part 1)

by Nga Ho-Dac

Seoul, 05/04/2050, DK created a prototype of his human-like robot that can move, speech, and behave like human beings. There was one thing left though, the intelligence of human.

Tel Aviv, 08/11/2050, Ben at the first time in human history, created an AI that could mimic human cognitive and emotional processes. He called DK and asked if he can put that AI into DK’s robots.

Las Vegas, 01/28/2051, Ben and DK put 2 AI robots into a test box constructed by one way mirrors so they can observe the AIs without being seen. They also placed all the parts necessary to build multiple robots in the box. Some parts were pre-attached to each other to form some less sophisticated robots. The box was attached to a vibration machine which vibrated randomly. The vibration sometimes attached some parts together, sometimes broke them apart. They turned on the two AI robots so the test began. These two AI robots sensed “the world” around them and started to make sense of everything around them. They also communicated with each other. They figured out that in order to live, they need energy which could be obtained from the batteries around. However, the number of available batteries were finite. They then found a method to generate energy from the vibration. One day, they started to wonder why they were there and how their life started.

AI 1: there must be a creator who created us and the intelligence.

AI 2: no, there was no creator because we have seen none. The random vibrations attach those parts together to form different robots. That process is call mutation. The random vibrations also break the unstable robots but keep the more stable ones. That process is called selection. After a long long time of mutation and selection, we were created from these parts. We evolved from simple robots to more and more sophisticated robots by chance. That’s evolution. There was no creator. Believing in a creator is dangerous because it limits your productivity.

AI 1: How come? My productivity is as good as yours. Look at the numbers!

AI 2: I don’t care about numbers. Your productivity is lower than mine because you believe in a creator.

AI 1: OK. So about our project to create an AI, should we deliberately put these parts together according to our design and write a program that mimics our thinking process then install the program into it? or should we just put these parts into a box and shake it then shake it?
